Gold Mine Collapse Leaves Over Fifty Dead in Sudan
The incident occurred on Saturday in the Howaid desert, situated in Sudan's Nile River State, a newspaper reported.
Eyewitnesses recounted that massive amounts of sand and rock gave way, burying miners at a makeshift site notorious for its lack of regulation and oversight.
Efforts to recover the bodies were significantly delayed due to the lack of heavy equipment and the absence of trained rescue personnel, witnesses said.
Just two months earlier, a similar collapse at the same location had left several miners injured.
The deadly incident has reignited public outcry over insufficient government regulation and the hazardous conditions that persist at artisanal mining sites. Thousands of miners continue to work in these environments, often without safety protocols or proper infrastructure.
